A few hours later, the same boat from the painting ‘High tide’ rests on the sand, left behind by the retreating tide. The water has pulled away, revealing the textures of the seabed and the quiet stillness of low tide. The sky, now softer and more diffused, reflects the changing mood of the landscape. The loose, gestural brushstrokes capture this transition—where movement gives way to stillness, and the waiting begins.

This painting was created on site, between the Dutch islands of Vlieland and Terschelling. Watching the tide shift over the course of the day, I was drawn to how the same scene could transform so completely. The boat, once floating freely, now rests motionless, waiting for the water to return.

I hope viewers feel the rhythm of the tides and the passage of time in this piece—a reminder of nature’s quiet cycles and the patience they demand. There is a sense of pause, of in-between, of anticipation for what comes next.

I always use oil paint for its depth of color and rich texture. The layering of paint allows me to capture both the softness of the sky and the solidity of the grounded boat, giving life to the contrast between water and land.
